iPhone gaining traction in UK

Currently in lead in the UK, Nokia may be given a run for its money as the iPhone is set to be the number one mobile web browsing device. According to iTWire and StatCounter, the iPhone took 0.06 percent of the total internet browser marketshare in the UK for March 2008.

According to StatCounter, the iPhone definitely has some work cut out, if it is to surpass Nokia’s 0.15 percent market share to date as of March. iPhone is currently in second place with it’s 0.06 percent (which goes up to 0.09 percent if iPod touch browsing is also figured in). But that is still way ahead of the Blackberry with it’s 0.02 percent.

David Beckham receives a golden Apple

If you thought your Apple iPod touch was expensive, then you might be in for a surprise when you learn about this gold-plated touch. David Beckham of soccer (or football as it is known in the rest of the world) fame received a golden iPod touch from his teammates after participating in his 100th national club appearance. Engadget is reporting that this iPod touch is worth over 600 English pounds (or $1,188 US dollars). Of course they didn’t skimp on the iPod itself, as you can see it is the 32 GB model.

Dance piece, for iPod shuffle

Apparently this iPod-enabled dance performance has been around for quite a while (here’s an NYT piece on it from 2006), but it’s the first we’ve heard of it, and it’s pretty amazing. The 87-year-old choreographer, Merce Cunningham, who has collaborated with John Cage and Andy Warhol among others, has created a dance performance piece called eyeSpace.

Apparently, the music, which can be downloaded preperformance and is written by composer Mikel Rouse (no relation at all to TUAW’s own Mike Rose) plays in the audience’s iPods while the dancers dance (and other atmospheric sounds are added during the performance as well). Very interesting. The NYT piece seems to hint that the tracks are meant to be played in random order on each iPod, which would mean that the timing wasn’t too important, but it’s a cool idea (even more cool that it’s done by an artist of Cunningham’s age, but what else do you expect from a Mac fan?).

Definitely reminds me, too, of the MP3 Experiments done by Improv Everywhere in New York. Just goes to show you that we’re still in the middle of the digital music revolution — when we can listen to almost anything anywhere at any time, who knows what other creative folks will come up with?

Nike+ coming to iPhone and iPod touch

Multiple sources are repeating Stuff.tv’s report that Apple is planning to bring the Nike+ system to the iPhone and iPod touch. Nike+ is of course a special kit, originally made for iPod nano, that will record the distance and length of a walk or run — you stick the little sensor in your shoe, and it works as a timer and pedometer to record personal workout stats.

Stuff also reports that in addition to bringing along the sensor system, the new Nike+ system may also be able to take advantage of the iPhone’s and touch’s wifi by sending stats from the sensor directly to Nike’s online database, where a new “Coach” system will help you schedule runs and activities.

Sounds pretty amazing. Of course, this is only the beginning of the kind of “life management” software that we’ll see coming out of the SDK. Stuff suggests that your iPhone will help you know when go to out and for how long, but of course we know that by the time June comes around it’ll be able to do a lot more than that.

Pwn your iPhone using Windows

Yes, you can has winpwn — for beta values of “can has”. Pwning an iPhone means preparing it to accept custom iPhone firmware bundles (ipsw files) in iTunes. Winpwn 99.1.8 Beta has been released for public testing (though keep in mind that this particular tool is for use with Windows).

If you’re wary of beta releases and not an early adopter, you’ll probably want to keep waiting. There is no 2.0 support. You may run into LIBUSB errors (apparently fine, meaning you probably just don’t have no ibooter). You must have 1.1.4 firmware loaded onto your unit in order to pwn it — whether for Mac or Windows. The developers strongly request that any new users start with this tutorial. For more help, check out the #winpwn and @winpwn-devel channels on irc.osx86.hu IRC server.

Apple files for iPhone instant messaging patent

The one feature that most of us iPhone owners want is native instant messaging. With the upcoming SDK release, instant messaging apps will most likely not be able to run in the background (in other words, they may not receive messages when the phone is sleeping or doing other things). However, AppleInsider is reporting on an Apple patent for instant messaging on the iPhone that was filed in August of last year, but just granted in March of this year.

The drawing included with the patent filing looks identical to the SMS application on the iPhone, with some key differences, one of which is word suggestions that appear as bubbles above the keyboard. AppleInsider also reports that this service could be used as a substitute for MMS (multi media messaging) which the current iPhone is lacking.

You can read the full patent filing on the USPTO’s website.

BBC iPlayer Beta now available for iPhone

Remember the recent unconfirmed quotes from the BBC that a version of the iPlayer was coming for the hallowed iPhone? Well in a surprise move, no doubt trying to gain a little momentum with today’s SDK furore, a limited selection of shows from the iPlayer have been made available to UK residents on their iPhones. It’s worth noting, however, that the service makes use of existing technologies on the iPhone — not anything announced today.

At the moment only the BBC-produced ‘Whistleblower’ documentary seems to be working from the iPlayer website, with content being streamed-only via the iPhone’s built-in QuickTime player — quite the surprise given the heavy use of Windows-only technologies until fairly recently — although we’d guess there’s more shows on the way.

Of course, it’s a beta service (when aren’t they?) so you may not be able to access all the content and the usual caveats apply. As ever, the iPlayer is only for UK residents.

Grey & Non-warranted Dension Stock – BEWARE

We would like to inform anybody that are looking to buy Dension Gateway iPod kits from ANY source – whether it be online or offline – to be very careful.

iPodCarKitDirect & Dension have been informed of a number of “Grey stock” items which have been imported illegally or through the wrong channels are worming their way into the UK market.

When buying an iPod kit for your car, please double check that the items you ordering are legitimate otherwise the Dension warranty will be void. If you are aware of anybody selling these kits then please inform ourselves.

There are VERY FEW legitimate online dealers of Dension iPod kits, for a full list visit the following link:

http://www.dension.com/dealers.php

OK, so you are probably thinking “How do i tell if the people selling me the Dension kit are buying them from the correct source?” Well the answer is simple:

When you buy, ask the retailer if they can tell you the serial number on the item, the serial number is always found on a Dension sticker on the bottom of the unit. If they cannot provide this then they don’t have one – meaning that the stock is NOT to be trusted.

If you already have an item purchased from anywhere which doesn’t have a sticker then please contact them to discuss.

Dension Gateway Cradle News

Dension have been working very hard behind the scenes to make sure that all you guys with new Apple iPod’s and the new Apple iPhone can have them mounted on your dash in a cradle.

Previously, if you wanted a Dension Gateway kit that would hold your iPod or iPhone, you would have to have gone for the Dension Dock Cable and stored your iPod or iPhone in your glove box – NOT ANY MORE.

Dension have just released sleeves/inserts which will come with the Dension Active Cradle as standard on any order from now on. They will allow all new iPods to fit into the Dension Active Cradle as well as the iPhone.

This is very exciting news for our customers, many of which have been waiting for this for a long time!

If you already have a Dension Active Cradle and DON’T have the sleeve/insert for the new iPods and iPhone then fear not, these will be available soon to be purchased separately.

Apple iPhone bracket now available

Brodit and iPod Car Kit Direct have been working very hard on producing the highest quality iPod mounts and passive cradles for a very long time indeed. The latest batch of items will hold all the new iPods into a passive cradle in your car without damaging the dashboard.

The cradles will work with the following Apple iPods:

The Apple iPhone (all hard disc sizes)
The Apple iPod Classic 5th Generation (All sizes)
The Apple iPod Nano 3rd Generation (All sizes)

To view these items just simply click “iPod Mounting” on the left hand of our website underneath the “products” bar. Then click “Passive Cradle”
